Sequencer beginnings
Sequencer beginnings

One of the outfits in Maelstrom 2600 will be a sequencer.  I have been experimenting with the sequencer designs in Nic Collin’s book Handmade electronic instruments.  I am thinking that this sequencer would also work as a gate to control other audio.   Tweet

Testing out making stretch sensors using a knitting nancy.  I think this could be quite good.  At STEIM showed me some they had made where they used elastic to make sure they snapped back into shape.  So far I’m testing what feels good.  I think a combination of wool and resistive yarn gives a good [...]

Summer Saturnalia
Summer Saturnalia

I’m going to be showing Linttulalaa, a series of wearables, at the Summer Saturnalia festival from the 20 – 22 July in the Yorkshire Dales.  It looks like it’s going to be a really great festival. With four stages and lots of interesting music, art and theatre. We will be setting up in a tent [...]

Pokey Controls
Pokey Controls

I ‘ve been playing around with the idea of creating interfaces that are clumsy and awkward.  My first test is this pokey hole.  When you stick your finger in the hole your body resistance will control audio.  I have tried this with a  nand synth, you can wiggle your finger for a good effect. Tweet

I’ve been playing with vector shapes and 3d cameras in after effects a bit lately. Here’s a video I made for a QUT event and a colourful video inspired by 80s video graphics (such as the video logos found on vhs movies) Tweet

To lunetta is to modular
To lunetta is to modular

We have been researching circuitry and sounds for Maelstrom 2600.  The idea is that it will be modular in nature but when trying to imagine and visualise the process we realised that a traditional modular synthesizer might not work in the way that we require. One important aspect of each costume is that it will [...]

STEIM, synths and canals
STEIM, synths and canals

I’ve been at STEIM in Amsterdam this week working on Maelstrom 2600. STEIM are consulting on the project and so I went to Amsterdam to meet up and kickstart the project.  There are so many different elements that need to work together on this project and having access to all the different people at STEIM [...]

Maelstrom 2600
Maelstrom 2600

Thanks to support from the Australia Council and Steim, I am starting work on Maelstrom 2600 – a wearable modular synthesizer…. Maelstrom 2600 is a wearable instrument that is played simultaneously by multiple people. Maelstrom 2600 uses soft circuit technologies to translate a modular synthesizer into multiple costumes which can be used in participatory performance. [...]

bum bumbum
bum bumbum

I have just returned from touring with kunt for the past 2 weeks.  Kunt is myself and lulu deluxe.  We made audible bums for this tour.  I embeded a basic bassy sounding synth made from a 40106 chip into some extra booty padding that we made.  Each bottom featured a light meter and 4 touch [...]
